ACKPOT JIVE is a genuine introduction to the sound of a rhythmical resistance in South Africa.
With an oppressive regime spinning out of control, it urged the natives into catharsis where song and dance became peaceful mediums to protest against the madness. This compilation is a unique flame of raw power in contrast to the heartless hustle of the apartheid. Nurtured amongst the crates of Johannesburg we see a rare and compelling selection of 45's from underground labels such as Chocolate City, Mumsie, Beat City, Six Mabone, Ring and Soweto.
Limited to 300 copies - this is a combination of Sax Jive, Zulu Soul, Xhosa, Zulu Disco, Kwela, Bump Jive, and Sotho Soul. Throughout these subgenres a constant determination is forever shielding the soul-powered vocals, while melodic liberation fuses together the pride and passion belonging to a community built on resilience. Local guitar riffs, fruity organ runs and the cry of the fearless penny whistle hit the dancefloor hard creating an infectious boogie. Disco, Funk, Soul and Jazz are definitely in the mix and naturally elements of Punk start to rise above.
Regarding the conservation of these recordings, the listener can be assured that they survive true to the fundamental essence of South African culture. Restored by means of pure analogue and custom built equipment at Masterlabs in Dublin City. We’re proud to deliver a fragment of history exclusive to a society gifted in transforming extreme levels of injustice into such sonically joyous movements!
Let the contour and pulse guide us into positive elevation.

"Our mission is one of cultural exchange. We collaborate with cultural centers, connect youth to a global audience, and contribute equipment and training."
- THE BEAT MAKING LAB
ABOUT THE HUB
"Located in Lesotho in Southern Africa, The Hub is a creative technology lab with a difference - geared at education, activism and social change. In a country that faces dire poverty, a 40% youth unemployment rate and an HIV prevalence rate of almost 23%, The Hub works directly with young people to provide them with access to computers, the internet and digital media training.
In collaboration with US-based ARTVSM, The Hub is seeking funding for a Beat Making Lab that will consist of a two-week workshop on music production. Participants will learn skills related to composition, sampling, songwriting, social media management and entrepreneurship. After the workshop, The Hub will be permanently equipped with recording equipment, creating the only community music studio in Lesotho. Additionally, The Beat Making Lab will benefit The Hub’s existing film crew, animation projects and more with access to equipment for high quality sound recording.
The Beat Making Lab’s goals include cultural exchange, innovative collaboration, and social/entrepreneurial impact. Music is a tool to build dialogue, amplify voice and strengthen solidarity. As hip-hop and electronic music have developed into global culture, there is a growing need for resources, education and software to help youth express themselves in these genres. With your help, The Beat Making Lab at The Hub can help us to tap into the virtually endless possibilities for using music, creative activism and storytelling as mediums for change in Lesotho."
CRATE LIFE
These groovy little numbers were spotted at a junk store in Johannesburg about a decade ago. A box of sonic surprises was gathered up by Aidan Foley, brains behind Masterlabs in Dublin City. The box of 45s were then shipped back to Dublin where he awaited their voyage successful.
A haul of nearly one hundred 45s from Go - Go, Black Cat, Star Black, Teal Records, Mumsie, Plastik and other rare labels. These would have been a minority even in the homeland. It was extremely difficult to find any information on the history of the tracks compiled on Jackpot Jive. The condition of these singles are surprisingly good - considering the life they must of had. Surviving the heat and hustle of the 70's in South Africa.
This is the first compilation of more to come from Masterlabs Records. Its full of township jive, funk elements and packed full of soul.
This is a limited edition of these rarities , so don't sleep on this one!
We're trying to raise enough cash to fund a project over in South Africa - we want the energy to go back to the country these wonderful songs came from.
'The Hub', Morija S.A is doing fanTASTIC work! This record will fund the BEAT MAKING LAB to set up a permanent studio for the community to create contemporary beats and bands, riddims and sounds.
We want to give something back to the people of South Africa. Everyone who has worked on this project has a big love for Africa and its culture, music and art. We want to contribute back into this community and are doing so this way.
